steps to follow during a network infrastructure auditWe just finished a very difficult project that involved a complete network infrastructure for a client in a very specific low margin market.

Our mission was to study the current network infrastructure, the current co-location provider, but also determine what infrastructure would be required to allow the client to grow to 10 times their current size.

People involved

We activated four people for this project:

  • Cabling Specialist
  • Two Networking and Virtual Specialists
  • Project Manager

The project took over 6 weeks to complete including a number of onsite interview sessions, on site cable and server testing sessions and a visit to the location site.

There were a number of critical issues that were found but those will be kept under wraps.

The audit process

The important points that we have found to be very useful during our audit process:

  • Always find and interview the high performing employees.
  • Always interview the employees that complain the most about their environment.
  • Do not ignore or over look the troubleshooting basics like connections, calling, power, etc.
  • Keep an open mind about where and what could be a trouble area.
  • Make sure employees know that you are there to evaluate their performance.
  • Follow- up with any employees that you miss because they are busy or they are not available during a net review session. These may seem to be low profile issues but we have found that they can make or break the success of the investigation.

The reporting process

When creating the report and reporting the audit findings there are a number of things that are important to include:

  • An executive summary.
  • A report of the existing hardware.
  • A report of the existing issues as they relate to the found issues.
  • The findings of the interviews as they relate to the overall audit findings.
  • Estimate of the costs required to correct the existing issues found.
  • Projected recommendations to implement the required changes.
  • Footnotes for any new terms or items that need to be explained for upper management.

Simple reporting format

The report should be written using the old ‘IBM’ format:

  • Tell them what you will tell them.
  • Tell them.
  • Tell them what you told them.

Summary of audit study and report

Following these simple suggestions should help anyone who has to conduct and report on a study like a network infrastructure audit.

What study issues have you encountered and how have you dealt with them? What is the one thing that you have found helps when conducting and reporting on a study? Please share your experiences in the comments below, or on our Facebook page.
